Just start
(don't just sit there... do something!)
The approach of Labor Day brings many of our
schedules back into a rhythm. Vacations tail off, school starts up, children’s
bed times are earlier and even church attendance begins to climb. Some folks take the opportunity to hit the
gym again, eat healthy or run outdoors as the heat and humidity taper off. Since
they’re up with the kids some folks may revive a Bible reading program. You
name it and folks are back into it. It’s almost like a second New Years Day with
all the changes people try to make.
“The beginning of wisdom
is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Proverbs
4:7
This little nugget jumped out from the Book of
Proverbs recently. It proposes an incredibly simple method for
self-improvement. As an alternative to external motivation, like waiting for
the calendar to hit a certain date, just get started! If you want wisdom, get
wisdom. If you want to be patient, show patience. If you want to be gracious,
show grace. If you want to be healthy, get healthy. In short, you can’t acquire anything important
by waiting, wishing and hoping. Instead you
have to actively pursue it. Of course it’s as difficult as it is simple since intrinsic
motivation is just plain hard for plenty of people. But do it anyway. Soon you’ll have the traction and momentum
needed to effect lasting change!
Thanks
for all you do.
