Home again, home again

Thomas Wolfe, the major 20^th century novelist, famously wrote, “You can’t go home again.”  Having crossed several state lines this week, and enjoying dinner at the very table where I ate growing up, I can attest that Mr. Wolfe’s comment should not be taken literally.  Home is still there; family is still there.  Friends still live in the various towns where I met them, and conversations pick up right where they left off.

The more accurate assessment is a parallel to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus who said “No man ever steps in the same river twice.” Much of life is constant but much also changes.  The ebbs and flows transform every person and place. You can go home again…it just won’t be exactly as you left it.

 “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

God created the world as a perfect place. He created man in his image to dwell there and to make it home, but sin entered and created a chasm between God and man.  To bridge this gap God sent his son in the person of Jesus. We celebrate His birth at Christmas as the first step in a magnificent plan of redemption. Plans that will lead us back to a relationship with God if we just believe. Yes you can come home to the family of God…and the door is always open.
