two men

(make a difference...don't just make money)

Steve Jobs, the brilliant and temperamental CEO of Apple, died this week at age 56. He left behind a family, a fortune and legions of devotees of Apple products. The iPod, iPhone and iPad are just a few of the highly functional, easy to use devices that have frankly changed the way we live our lives. His impact on our work and leisure was truly remarkable and the sadness over his passing was displayed worldwide.

Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth died the same day at age 86. He was the last of the “big three” of the American civil rights movement. Along with the Revs. King and Abernathy he founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and pushed for the changes that brought an end to segregated America. As the most activist member of the big three, Shuttlesworth endured beatings, bombings and 35 jailings. His work had a transformational effect on the entire American landscape yet his passing seemed to slip well under the radar.

“He has told you O man what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

Both men were well known… even famous. Both made their mark on American society. One made living easier and the other made living possible. The second is more pleasing to God. The Bible is filled with calls for justice. Justice that is based in righteousness; on equitableness; on the just treatment of others. This is what Rev. Shuttlesworth strove for.

What kind of life will you strive for?

Brian
