Hiking

(over the river and through the woods...)

Today I went for a six-mile hike in Umstead State Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was a hot and humid day, but the woods were cool and shady. It was great way to spend a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon and a good workout to boot. And even though I had never been to this park before I did not get lost. First, the trail had been blazed long before I got there. Second, every half-mile or so an orange square was attached to a tree, denoting the trail I was on. Third, every time the trail crossed another there was a map marked with “YOU ARE HERE”.

Our life journey is not quite so clearly marked. I have yet to see orange squares up ahead of me or one of those green carpets like the financial services advertisements. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t some help.

God already knows where he wants us to go. So he puts people in our life to be mentors and give us the benefit of the trails they have already blazed. He gives us reminders of what trail we are on through songs or teaching or verses of scripture that we have memorized. And anytime we need it, we can ask him in prayer to give us a “YOU ARE HERE” heads-up.

Enjoy the journey!

Thanks for all you do.
