Flash in the pan

(don't just be noisy... do something!)

While in the midst of moving, our family is making a concerted effort to visit some of the places we never got to near our Ohio home. One place is Fort Meigs, which played an important role in stopping the British advance southward from Canada during the War of 1812. We learned many things, including the source of several modern figures of speech. The “lock, stock and barrel” are the three parts of a musket from that period. And a “flash in the pan” was an explosion of black powder that caused noise and smoke but failed to launch the projectile from a musket. Lots of commotion, but no real effect.

“Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away” Matthew 13:5-6

Unfortunately some Christians wind up as a flash in the pan. Their salvation justifiably gives them an intense emotional experience. But without cultivating their faith they often don’t have the roots they need to hang in there when the heat turns up. When we take the time and effort to feed and nurture our faith with prayer, study and worship we grow deeper and produce a lasting impactful legacy. So aim for real effect…along with the commotion…and encourage your friends and family to do the same!

Thanks for all you do.
