Do Unto Others
(is it really that hard to be nice?)
Our family has become enamored with the British mini-series “Downton Abbey”. The acting is first rate, the accents are classic and the setting is gorgeous. The story follows the aristocratic Crawley family as they deal with the changing world before and after the First World War. The overriding aspect of the show that continues to impress is the manners, patience and general civility shown by the characters to one another. It’s not just the servants toward their employers either; it runs across the board. Even the insults are measured.
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
The “Golden Rule” is oft quoted and is found in most of the world’s cultures in one form or another. Respecting and caring for others are, of course, central tenets of the Christian faith. Each person is created in God’s image. Each person, rich or poor, has intrinsic worth. Each person, young or old, has dreams and feelings. And in its simplest form, if we all treated each other the way we want to be treated ourselves the problems of the world could easily be solved.
While we wait for that day we must do our best to follow Christ’s instruction. And we must reach out and help comfort those who’ve been treated unfairly or unjustly by others. We must stand up and fill in the gap where others have fallen short.
Thanks for all you do.
